Hank was pretty much collateral damage. The plan wasn't to kill Hank but his life wasn't all that important to Renard and Adalind. I agree that they fully expected Nick to hand over the key so they probably never planned on Hank dying. It kinda sounds more screwed up on the parts of Renard and Adalind when you put it that way.
I always disliked how that arc finished up. They could've done that to Hank much earlier if the plan was to threaten Nick with his death all along. I thought they were going with a bit of subterfuge by having Adalind weasel her way into Hank's life but they blew it up and just decided to be outright confrontational with Nick which made her bewitching of Hank seem like a waste of time.
