I digress but, was there ever a plan to kill Hank? Adalind did threaten Nick that Hank would die since he (Nick) didn't hand over the keys but the plan was to get the keys, not to kill Hank. They wanted Nick to believe that a dead Hank would be his fault for refusing to hand over the keys in exchange for his friend's life. A dead Hank also would have meant failure on Adalind's part (as seen by Renard) to get the key from Nick. This doesn't make what they did to Hank right though.
I seem to recall that Renard had Adalind perform the spell so Nick would be forced to 'save' Hank by handing over the key. Instead Nick came up with plan 'B' to kill Adalind's wesen spirit to save Hank and keep his key, essentially calling their bluff. Actually, he pulled one over Adalind. I have been meaning to rewatch that episode but haven't had the chance to yet.
