Kelly left her son in order to get revenge for the death of her husband and to get rid of the coins and left her son with a famous active grimm, Monroe knew Maria by name, her sister. The aunt protected Nick by moving across the country. Maria left her boyfriend too and worked as a librarian in one place after moving to Portland. It sounded like she moved again since Nick had not heard anything about Maria for 2 years in the first show.
