Started reading them in '97, I think. Trouble is, I've forgotten everything but the most general outline, so I keep promising myself to re-read the whole series; but haven't done so to date. I just love the television production and am one on those folks who don't mind what they're doing to the story at all.I have first editions of every book (except GOT), as well as the British first edition of ASOS, because no way was I willing to wait another 3 months for the American version to come out. I also contemplated stealing the first edition of Game of Thrones from my local library to complete my set, but my conscience won out.
For the record, the British version of ASOS has the best map of Westeros in the series (though, funny enough the British version of AFFC has the worst map).

Martin based much of his series on the English War of the Roses, and particularly the real life (and fictional) person of Richard III, who is made famous by Shakespeare's play of the same name. Eddard Stark, Stannis Baratheon, and Tyrion all parallel Richard III in many ways. Based on history, Richard III had a bastard son. Do you know what his bastard's name was? John.
