Adalind made a conscious decision to put her children ahead of herself. The results weren't necessarily immediate. Things didn't work out when Diana was born and when Kelly came she was even more determined that's why she swallowed her pride and went to Nick. It's this Adalind that I loved, not the one that fell for Nick. I don't have a problem with their relationship because I only ever cared for Adalind the mother, not Adalind the scheming hexenbiest lawyer. In terms of her character, S5 and S6 are my favorites.
I am aware that her personality took a knock but I hated S1 and S2 Adalind. I can't mourn her when I couldn't stand her. It's unfortunate that she spent most of S5 too reliant for too long but I don't think she was too dependant. I think she could have easily left Nick had she not developed genuine feelings for Nick. And if Sean/BC had come much sooner dangling Diana in front of her, before Nick left for Germany, she could have left him.
For me, once she made the decision, for someone who was selfish and driven by the whims of hurt feelings when things didn't go her way, she was bound to because very dull when her focus shifted to making the best situation for her son. If Adalind hadn't gone through the things she did in S1 and S2, she wouldn't have seemed too docile in S5 and S6. I think it was impossible for her to remain the same Adalind and stay with Nick as long as she did and Nick was responsive to the new Adalind. He realistically struggled longer reconciling new Adalind with the one who'd done awful things but he was as equally past the point of return as she was that's why S6 was without any real issues. Nick went through changes within when he fell for Adalind.
For someone who enjoyed S1 and S2 Adalind, I can see the frustration with her story in the last two seasons. Unfortunately, I have no such problems. I see it as positive character development and as someone who never had problems with her relationship with Nick, I'm cool with how the show ended. If Adalind was to end up with either one of the three men (Sean, Meisner and Nick), I'm glad it was Nick. Sean would have been a step backwards and Meisner didn't seem like someone who would give up his mercenary type of life. Nick was the only one in sync with Adalind because they genuinely wanted the same things in life. The only hurdle was their past and the show didn't wholly disregard it and conveniently used it to put stumbling blocks in a relationship that clicked sooner than expected.
