Calvary - Hexenadler - 04-08-2015

It's rare to see a film with a purely good central protagonist these days (or at least, a protagonist who endeavors to be purely good). I admire it for that. It makes me appreciate what the showrunners are trying to do with Nick on GRIMM a lot more.

This is a great movie, but it's also a tough movie. Sometimes it's downright unpleasant. The unapologetic venom displayed by the villagers towards Gleeson's priest got under my skin in more ways than one, mainly because it was all too familiar. I've opted to remain an individual of religious faith for my own reasons, and that's tended to invite the worst kind of ridicule and bile imaginable. The lack of "objective evidence" on my part apparently gives a person the right to treat me like a mass murderer. In the wake of the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandals, I suspect many innocent vicars out there are treated much like Vietnam war veterans: They are cruelly judged because of their occupations, as opposed to their personalities, and are often spat upon, either literally or verbally.

The scene with the dog was especially horrible. Nothing justifies that kind of petty malice.
