I think a big name star would be too distracting. I have often heard that some big name stars can't get parts because the audience identifies their face with a previous character. I read an interview of someone connected with the Superman universe and the said they always cast nobodies because they don't want the audience thinking, "that's not Superman, that's (fill in the blank)."
But i think its nice when a show casts actors and actresses that are talented, and a lot of talented actors have a body of work. And as long as the audience might recognize them anyway, might as well use somebody we would get a kick of seeing again. Like for Grimm, the actress who played the Muse, Nora Zehetner, was a recurring guest start of Heroes (not to mention Gray's Anatomy).
Also Sci fi has a habit of re-using actors. Take for instance, Morena Baccarin and Jewel Staite, of Firefly fame. they have mostly been on Sci fi shows. (Morena has been on just about everything tho, including The Flash, Gotham, the Mentalist, and the good wife. [ and i just discovered early in her career, Jewel was on Wonderfalls, my second favorite example of a show that was cancelled too soon])
Oh, and don't forget we got David Baldwin on one episode.
So, I would much rather see Grimm continue to use these "smaller names" in their shows.
