We know that the Renards are one (but their house has not been assigned their name as of yet). I saw it speculated on this thread and also somewhere else that one of the seven was probably of Japanese royalty. Makes sense, with the Dragon's Tongue order being associated with them.
And I am beginning to think that the Baron's house is one of the seven royal families. It would explain alot, and keep him in the loop, storywise.
As to the creature makeup of the families, during the Crusades the royal families used wesen armies and employed Grimm to keep them under control. They seem like plain humans to me, but I am guessing they produce offspring regularly with non-royal-wesen-grimm-types.
Nick doesn't seem to know how he detects wesen, and he has said that he has never found any reference to it in his books. But he hasn't read all the books - maybe a solution to the mystery is contained in them.
As to what exactly the royals are, I believe they are a very powerful kind of wesen... The reason for this is the captain, when he Woges he looks a lot like a hexenbiest but there are features that I have not seen in other hexenbiest, like where parts of his skin actually move as if something was crawling underneath... there was more but I'd have to watch it again to make a decent description.
I am going to watch for that, too, since it would distinguish him from others of his kind. Good catch!
