I did some googling: Ariel is a hebrew first name and means "gods stove of fire", no coincidence for sure. The way she deals with her problematic father is something like "playing god" or "playing destiny"
Fred is a part of some german first names, the Fred-part always comes from old german "fridu", modern german "Frieden" - peace. He's not exactly a man of peace, so perhaps for Fred a simple translation doesn't lead anywhere.
Besides Tolkien-names for dragons (Smaug and others) there's Fafnir of the old Nibelungen-saga, no Fred, no Ariel I know of.
